WATCH: 6-year-old girl recovering after hair lit on fire by stranger

A strange and frightening incident in Topeka, Kansas has residents shaken up.

Six-year-old Jayden Beddo and her brother Christopher were playing happily in their backyard when suddenly things took a turn for the worse.

“Christopher, at that point in time, came running into the house to come and get me,” uncle George Hearne told KSNT. “I ran out the back door to see my niece’s head completely engulfed in flames.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

A stranger had cut through a back alley by the house and called Jayden over to the fence. He lit a cigarette then lit her hair.

Thankfully, Hearne was able to put out the fire and call EMS right away.

Jayden’s injuries were so severe she was sent to the paediatric intensive care unit at the University of Kansas Hospital.

Her uncle says 70 per cent of her head is covered in third-degree burns. One of the doctors treating her, Dr. Dhaval Bhavsar, says the medical team is not ruling out the need for a surgical skin graft.

There are very few clues for Topeka Police to work with and they are “not actively seeking any person of interest at this time,” according to reports. However, they are still investigating the incident and urging for any witnesses to call them.

Jayden’s family has set up a crowd funding page to help with the medical bills. They have raised $690 of their $2,000 goal.
