BATTLEFORD, Sask. – A man is in custody after a sexual assault in Saskatchewan. The assault happened this past Monday in the town of Battleford during the early morning hours.
RCMP say they initially received a report around 4:30 a.m. of a woman outside a residence requiring assistance. She was found in the area and officers discovered she had been the victim of a sexual assault.
She was taken to hospital where she was treated for injuries to her head, torso and extremities. There is no word on her current condition.
A suspect was identified and was arrested late Tuesday afternoon. Cory Smockum, 33, has been charged with sexual assault, assault, and choking to overcome resistance.

Smockum appeared in North Battleford provincial court on Wednesday and will remain in custody until his next appearance on Feb. 3.
