Businesses hoping for compensation because of boil water advisory

WINNIPEG — With eight restaurants in Winnipeg including 529 Wellington under the boil water advisory from Tuesday until Thursday, Doug Stephen is hoping the city seriously considers compensation.

“There are a lot of businesses that went through a lengthy process to operate,” said Stephen, who is the president of WOW! Hospitality.

He can’t even begin to estimate how much money his company spent on everything from bagged ice to bottled water.

“There is a cost and I don’t think it is inconsequential,” said Stephen.

The mayor said city council would have to approve any compensation plan and right now that isn’t his priority.

“What we want to know first and foremost is what was the source of the issue from a couple days ago at that remains my primary focus,” said Bowman.

Stephen said even thought he advisory is over, he still has to make sure his restaurants are safe.

“The filters going into the water system will have to be replaced before we can get operational again with our tap water,” he said, adding his ice machines will also have to be sanitized.
