Reginans frustrated by residential grading

REGINA – In an effort to rid residential streets of ruts before the cold makes a comeback, city of Regina crews are taking advantage of the warmer weather and are grading residential streets.

“If we didn’t do something now, in our short window that we had, there’s a potential that all that slush, all that rutting that was taking place was going to freeze,” said Chris Warren, the city’s winter maintenance manager.

However, while the streets might be in better shape, the residential plowing is creating another problem. Snow is being piled up in parking lanes.

“The ruts are no longer going to throw a vehicle into my parked car, but I’ve also eliminated a place to park my car,” said Cameron Wright, who lives in Atkinson Street.

Warren said the city has received about 50 complaints so far this week. Residents are also making noise on social media.

On Facebook Gayle Radosh Hodel said, “Not pleased with the horrible residential grading job done to our crescent. With the cooler temps coming our way, the sidewalk and street will certainly be sheer ice. may have to put on our skates…”

The city of Regina took to Twitter to respond.

However, Warren explained that snow is expected to be stored in the parking lane, according to city policy.

“We would just ask the public to have a little bit of patience and consideration.”
