WATCH: Firefighter wearing GoPro saves children from burning building

TORONTO – It’s the very definition of heroism: running into a burning building to save the children trapped inside.

And that’s exactly what firefighters with the Fresno, California fire department were forced to do this past Sunday after an apartment complex caught fire in the city’s southwest.

Because one of them was wearing a GoPro camera, the firefighters can “take us with them” as they run into the smoke and flames to save three children trapped inside.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

In the newly-released footage from the Fresno Fire Department, we “follow” the firefighters from the moment they arrive at the call, gearing up as black smoke pours out from the apartment.

We can hear a mother screaming for her children, who are still trapped somewhere inside the burning building.

Then we are with the firefighters as they enter the burning building, the smoke and ash so constricting that it’s almost impossible to see.

Incredibly, they manage to locate all three children, covered in soot and ash, and knocked unconscious from the smoke inhalation.

The three children were in critical condition Wednesday afternoon. They were taken under the care of child protective services, while the Fresno Police Department investigates where the mother was during the time of the fire.
