WATCH ABOVE: The three sons of fallen RCMP Const. David Wynn were given a special honour at the Oilers game Tuesday evening, as the team paid tribute to their father.
EDMONTON — An emotional scene unfolded at centre ice before Tuesday’s Edmonton Oilers game as the team honoured fallen Mountie, Const. David Wynn, who was laid to rest Monday.
Wynn was shot in the head while investigating a vehicle theft in St. Albert Jan. 17. Police said it was a routine licence plate check that led to the 42-year-old being critically injured in a confrontation at the Apex Casino in St. Albert. His family made the decision to take him off life support last Monday.

“A real life reminder of what the men and women of our local police forces and the RCMP do to protect us,” Sportsnet host Gene Principe said before the Oilers faced off against the Minnesota Wild.
“Unfortunately at times, there are tragic results. Before puck drop…we remember and respect a man of honour.”
The ice was then lit up into a sea of red.
Public address announcer Mark Lewis invited the crowd to stand and remove their hats before he recounted the tragic turn of events that led to the passing of the St. Albert Mountie, whom he described as a “loving husband and father.”
“Const. Wynn made the ultimate sacrifice to our country and our deepest sympathies go out to the Wynn family and to all of those impacted by this tragic event.”
Four RCMP constables, who were colleagues of were invited onto the ice following a moving moment of silence.
After an emotional rendition of the Canadian anthem, people could be seen wiping away tears. Const. Wynn’s sons were then introduced to the crowd.
“Ladies and gentlemen at this time we’d like to welcome three very special individuals,” Lewis said. “Would you please give a big round of applause and welcome to Rexall Place, Const. David Wynn’s children — Matthew, Nathan and Alex Wynn — for the dropping of the ceremonial first puck.”
The boys also posed for photos and shook the hands of the Oilers and Minnesota Wild team captains before being ushered off the ice.
Auxilary Const. Derek Bond, who was shot in the same incident, was also honoured Tuesday night as he continues his recovery.
Const. Wynn’s funeral on Monday was attended by thousands, including Prime Minister Harper and more than 2,100 Mounties and other first responders from across the country.
