Man charged in connection with 2006 shooting of Mahdi Halane

WATCH: A Surrey family is feeling some semblance of justice for their murdered loved one. A man has now been charged in the death of Mahdi Halane, who died three years ago from injuries related to a shooting. Kristen Robinson reports.

A man faces manslaughter charges in connection with the 2006 shooting of Mahdi Halane at a Surrey gas station.

According to Surrey RCMP, Fushpinder Singh Brar was arrested without incident in Vancouver on Friday and charged with manslaughter.

On Oct. 14, 2006, Halane was shot in the neck following a confrontation at a gas station in the 12800 block of 96 Ave. in Surrey, leaving him a quadriplegic.

“Our whole entire world was flipped upside down,” said his sister Juweria Halane.

“It was a struggle to keep the family together and make sure we all stay strong…It was a complete uphill battle, but he had the will to live.”

His death in 2012 was attributed to the 2006 shooting.

The arrest comes after an investigation by Surrey RCMP Unsolved Homicide Unit.

“This latest arrest, and charge of manslaughter, is a direct result of investigators following up on leads and new information received, and we hope it will help bring some closure to the family,” says Insp. Manny Mann from the Surrey RCMP Major Crime Section.

For Halande’s family, the arrest brings mixed emotions.

“It’s a bittersweet moment,” said Halane.

“This would have been so much sweeter if Mahdi was here. For Mahdi to hear with his own ears. It still hasn’t sunk it what this means for us.”

Surrey RCMP believe there are other individuals involved in the case who have not been identified.
