Two dead in accident on Highway 1 east of Chilliwack

WATCH: Two people are dead after a crash in the Fraser Valley. A driver crossed the centre median on Highway 1 east of Chilliwack, smashing into an oncoming vehicle. Jeremy Hunka tells us what may have caused the collision.

Two people from Hope are dead after a crash between two vehicles on Highway 1 Friday evening.

The accident happened just after 7:40 p.m. at Exit 146 next to Herrling Island near Bridal Falls. A 72-year-old driver from Hope was travelling west when he crossed the median and crashed into an oncoming vehicle. He was declared dead at the scene. His passenger is being treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

The other driver, a 67-year-old woman from Hope, died in hospital.

The name of the victims have not been released.

It was raining heavily at the time, and it is believed that weather may have been a factor in the crash.
