LONDON, Ont. – The cause of a horrific fatal truck crash on Highway 401, west of London, remains under investigation.

The scene wasn’t cleared until 1 a.m. Friday after being shut down for nine hours while provincial police examined the scene and cleaned diesel fuel from the highway.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. Thursday in the westbound lanes of the highway (at Furnival Road) when the driver lost control of his rig and struck the centre median before hitting one of the concrete pillars of an overpass.

The truck driver, identified as Jacob Wall, 49, of Bayham, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The transport – which was carrying a load of car parts – was destroyed and diesel fuel was spilled onto both sides of the highway, resulting in a lengthy closure in both directions.

Police say the bridge pillar that was struck appeared to have only minor damage but it will be examined more closely to be sure.

“We’re still in the preliminary stages of our investigation,” said OPP Const. Troy Carlson. “We’ll have our technical traffic collision investigators on scene conducting the investigation to determine the cause of the collision.”
