NORTH BATTLEFORD, Sask. – A man taken into custody after a lengthy standoff in North Battleford, Sask. was a wanted man. Gabriel Poundmaker held police at bay for several hours on Thursday.
It started before noon on Thursday in a residential area near St. Mary’s Community School. The school was placed under lockdown and students were later transported to another location where they could be picked up by parents.
Residents in the area were told to lock their doors and others were evacuated.
Poundmaker, 24, was arrested without incident seven hours later. He was wanted for allegedly pointing a gun at Mounties during a high-speed chase on Jan. 14. No shots were fired at the time and he was able to evade capture.

Poundmaker is charged with:
- pointing a firearm;
- two counts of possession of a weapon with the purpose of danger to the public peace;
- two counts of possession of a weapon while prohibited;
- flight from a peace officer while operating a motor vehicle;
- dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; and
- four counts of breaching a probation order.
Poundmaker was to appear in North Battleford provincial court on Friday afternoon.
