WINNIPEG — An Elmwood man who had 29 guns hidden in his home was sentenced to two years imprisonment Thursday.

Police found an arsenal of weapons when they searched the Trent Avenue home of Trevor Zayac, 45, last July.

Handguns, semi-automatic rifles and several prohibited items were hidden in custom-made furniture and other spots around the house.

During a previous hearing, the court was told Zayac used his carpentry background to alter a table and picture frames to conceal guns and ammunition. Crown molding was also rigged with a hinge to hide compartments behind the walls where more guns and ammunition were stashed.

Some items were relatively in the open, such as a loaded revolver underneath the kitchen sink.

Crown prosecutors asked for a 30 month sentence, while Zayac’s defence lawyer wanted a conditional sentence because his client had been in custody since his arrest in July. However, Friday’s ruling means Zayac has another 13 months left to serve when time in custody is factored in.

Zayac was previously convicted in 1998 of weapons offences that included possessing prohibited weapons and pipe bombs.
