Former basketball coach sentenced to three and a half years in prison

CALGARY – A former basketball coach who had a sexual relationship with one of his players has been sentenced to three and half years in prison.

Dean Matthew Vigon plead guilty to sexual exploitation, making child pornography and luring on Thursday.

A court heard the relationship lasted two years and began when the girl was just sixteen.

The Court of Queen’s Bench Justice in the case noted that Vigon was in a position of trust and had a physical, emotional and intellectual advantage over the victim.

Vigon’s lawyer said the sentence was ‘fair and thoughtful’.

“She [the justice] had a lot of material to review, and I think she addressed denunciation and deterrence, which are the primary factors in these types of offences,” said Tonii Roulston.

“She also balanced that with individualized sentencing… so from a defence perspective, we’re of the view that the judge gave a fair sentence.”

The defence had argued for a two year sentence, plus probation. The crown asked for seven to eight years in prison.
