Police close street after panel falls from downtown Winnipeg building

WINNIPEG – Police closed a downtown street Thursday after an aluminum panel fell off a building, and another appeared ready to follow.

The panel came off the former Canada Post Tower building at 266 Graham Avenue, and was discovered on a nearby sidewalk at about 10 a.m., a city spokesperson said. A second “corner capping panel” was flapping in the wind on the side of the building.

Traffic remained blocked into the afternoon rush hour on Garry Street between Portage Avenue and St. Mary Avenue. The roadway was reopened by 6:30 p.m..

Motorists were asked to avoid the area until that time. There were no injuries.

The city bought the property from Canada Post as part of the deal to also buy the former Canada Post warehouse next door for use as the future Winnipeg police headquarters.
