UPDATE: A necropsy has now revealed the whale was struck by a propeller of a large vessel. Seattle based Kiro 7 reports officials say the young female whale was in good health before the accident.

No ferry service was disrupted after the carcass of what’s believed to be a gray whale was found trapped underneath a pier at the Washington State ferry terminal in downtown Seattle.

The carcass was spotted last night by a ferry captain as he was pulling in to the terminal from Bainbridge Island.

Spokesperson Broch Bender told Global News the carcass is floating underneath the pier, and is not in the way of any marine traffic.

The creature is presumed to be a gray whale, approximately 25 to 35 feet long.

Bender says the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were on scene and divers recovered the carcass late this afternoon.
