Driver charged after semi hauling gasoline rolls on QEII Highway

CALGARY – RCMP have laid charges against a 59-year-old man after a tanker-trailer carrying fuel rolled into a ditch on Tuesday.

RCMP say the tanker-trailer was southbound on the QEII Highway just north of Calgary when it collided with the centre median and rolled.

The truck was carrying 40,000 litres of gasoline and diesel at the time, and the rollover caused an estimated 25,000 litres of fuel to spill into the ditch and drain into nearby farmland.

RCMP were forced to close Highway 2 in both directions as crews worked to clean up the fuel spill.

At the time, police said they were looking at driver fatigue as one of the factors in this collision, as the driver had admitted he may have fallen asleep before the crash.
