Construction thieves strike twice at west side home

Crystal Haitsma is furious after someone broke into her home, still under construction, in west Lethbridge. Thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of items, including everything from toilette to a central vacuum system.

“They piled up a bunch of stuff on the side of the house and they must have gotten spooked so they only stole half as much as they planned. We found our hood fan down the alley, it must have fallen off,” says Haitsma.

This isn’t the first time Haitsma says she has been a victim of theft.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“A couple of months ago we had a pile of tools and they only took the ones that were expensive. So they must of known the other ones were minimal.”

Haitsma says while she always secures her locks, this time she admits her downstairs door was accidentally left open

“The funny thing is we always keep our doors locked ever since it happened a couple of months ago. I took my little boys down on Friday and I did not notice they opened the side door,” explains Haitsma.

Lethbridge Regional Police say construction site theft is nothing new, and it’s important to write down serial items so items can be tracked.

“ The only problem is the owners do not have serial numbers for the items so it’s hard to connect the two. Whether it’s electronics or appliances, make sure you keep serial numbers in a safe place,” adds Staff Sgt. Art Tamminga with the Lethbridge Regional Police.

Haitsma has posted an ad on social media, but so far no luck. She says it’s a costly lesson for her and a warning for others.

“It’s tricky when you have so many people coming and going to make sure everything is locked , but I think just be more aware of that.
