WATCH: Camera captures car crash as driver faints at wheel

Carol Deller of Michigan knew her fainting spells were cause for concern, but trusted her doctor when she was told they were probably just triggered by stress and was cleared to get behind the wheel.

While on vacation in Ft. Myers, Florida, the 67-year-old woman was driving when she suddenly fainted with her foot on the accelerator last Wednesday.

Her boyfriend David Knisely was in the passenger seat.

“She was just slumped over,” he told NBC2.

Knisely tried to move Deller’s foot as they accelerated to nearly 100 kilometres per hour, but he couldn’t reach.

He chose what he believed was the next best option: steer the car off the road and hope for the best.

“I didn’t want to hit any people. That was my concern,” he said.

A surveillance camera captured the frightening moment the SUV collided with a truck and flipped onto its side, skidding to a stop in front of a restaurant.

Amazingly, no one was seriously hurt and the couple escaped in one piece although Deller had to undergo surgery for her pacemaker.

“I think God was looking out for us,” Deller said after the crash.
