TORONTO – Labrador is giving new meaning to Canada’s nickname “The Great White North.”

Since Sunday, several areas have seen snowfall of about 70 cm of snow. And it’s not over yet.

At Wabush airport, more than 70 cm of snow has been recorded and more snow is on the way. In Labrador City, there is an additional two to four centimetres in the forecast, with the possibility of five to 10 for the Churchill Falls area.

Environment Canada has issued snowfall and winter storm warnings in many areas.

And not only are residents facing plenty of the white stuff, but they’re also dealing with high winds.

In Nain, gusts of up to 110 km/h are expected overnight, which will certainly make for hazardous driving conditions. A blizzard warning has been issued for Nain and Rigolet.

On top of the snow and the winds, it’s cold. Temperatures in the area are around -15 C and getting colder. And, of course, it feels much colder — closer to -30 C — with the windchill.

The good news is that the snow is expected to taper off for the area by Wednesday.
