Taxi stolen after Saskatoon cabbie assaulted

SASKATOON – A man is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday after allegedly stealing a taxi. He is also alleged to have assaulted the cabbie.

Police were called to the 600-block of 9th Street East just before 7 a.m. Sunday. The cabbie told Saskatoon police officers he had been assaulted and had his taxi stolen by a fare. He suffered minor injuries.

The cab was located at Ewart Avenue and Main Street where patrol officers attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver refused to pull over and headed east on Main Street.

He abandoned the taxi at Preston Avenue and fled on foot. The suspect was tracked down by a canine unit in the 2100-block of Main Street.

The 27-year-old man has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, evading police, impaired driving, assault and mischief over $5,000. He has made a first court appearance and will be back before a judge on Tuesday morning.
