Kenora couple saves family after truck falls through ice

KENORA, Ont. — John and Dorothy Monteith say were just at the right place at the right time when they saved a family whose truck got wedged in a pressure crack on an ice road in northern Ontario Thursday.

They were driving on the ice road near Rope Island when they spotted a soaking wet woman on the side of the road.

A truck had careened off the ice road and slid into a pressure crack. The woman got out and the man guided two children out of the vehicle, tossing them to the woman on the edge of the water, John Monteith said.

Monteith used a shovel to help the man to safety.

“We’re not heroes, we happened to be at the right place at the right time.”

Monteith only got the family’s last name, Skead, and said he’s glad they could save them from hypothermia.
