Harsh winter weather leads to power outages, snowfall warnings across B.C.

WATCH: The Fraser Valley and southern Vancouver Island bore the brunt of the latest storm to batter BC. Strong winds blew through early this morning, bringing down trees and leaving thousands of homes and businesses in the dark. Nadia Stewart reports.

An intense weather system in parts of B.C. Sunday passed quickly, but caused power outages for tens of thousands of people.

Strong winds knocked out power for BC Hydro customers in parts of southern Vancouver Island. Among the hardest hit communities are Saanich, Colwood and Langford. Hydro says power may not return until Sunday afternoon.

“The strongest winds affected mainly the greater Victoria area,” says Gary Dickenson, who added that the strongest gusts were felt at Gonzalez Bay, with winds up to 90 km/hour.

“We’re just looking at scattered showers for the rest of the day…the winds should die down later this evening.”

Customers also experienced blackouts on Saltspring, Pender and Saturna Islands.

In the interior, drivers are being urged to drive carefully because of significant snowfall. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for southern B.C. saying as much as 30 cm of snow could fall on the Coquihalla Hwy.

Heavy rain is expected to fall in Howe Sound and near Hope with up to 50 mm in the forecast.
