LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – Justice officials say an Alberta man has been extradited to the United States as part of an international investigation involving the importation of cocaine.
Hector Armondo Chavez, a Mexican citizen who lived in Lethbridge was handed over to U.S. marshals in Calgary on Thursday and put on a plane to Colorado, where he is wanted by the Drug Enforcement Agency.
Chavez, who is 28, was indicted along with six others in 2010 for the importation of cocaine from Mexico. The cocaine was brought to Colorado, from where it was sent to Canada.
The investigation began in April 2010 when a man from Coalhurst, Alta., was arrested at the Del Bonita port of entry by U.S. border protection officers.
A search of his vehicle yielded 46 packages of cocaine – or about 16 1/2 kilograms – concealed in hidden compartments.
