Council meets in private as Winnipeg convention centre concerns grow

WINNIPEG- City councillors will meet behind closed doors Friday afternoon to discuss concerns over the expansion of the Winnipeg convention centre.

Construction is on time, but plans to build a hotel across the street from complex are lagging.

The Carleton Inn was demolished in 2014 to make way for a new hotel. Property taxes from that project were to be used to help pay for the $180-million expansion of the convention centre.

CentreVenture still hasn’t found a buyer for the land.

A meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. at city hall. It is not open to cameras.

Dave Angus, president and CEO of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, is surprised it has taken so long to find an internationally recognized brand hotel for the site.

“It’s critical for development,” said Angus. “If we want to attract more conferences, we need another four star hotel.”
