WATCH: Abrupt exit for Target Canada

KELOWNA — After less than two years in Canada, Target is closing up shop north of the border. The company announced Thursday it will shut down its 133 stores.

With two locations in the Okanagan, one in Vernon and another in Kelowna, upwards of 300 people will soon be looking for work. In total 17,600 people nationwide will lose their jobs. The company says it’s set aside $70-million into an Employee Trust, giving nearly every worker four months compensation in wages and benefits.

From day one there were complaints the store didn’t live up to expectations, with store shelves often bare, higher prices than south of the border and less selection according to customers.

There’s no set date on when the Okanagan stores will close, but you can expect some big clearance sales for the next few months as the company liquidates its stock.
