Manitoba NDP leadership candidates’ promises costly: Tories

Manitoba Progressive Conservative Leader Brian Pallister is warning voters that all three NDP leadership candidates are making costly promises. Global News

WINNIPEG – Manitoba Opposition Leader Brian Pallister says promises being made by the three NDP leadership candidates could cost the province dearly.

Greg Selinger, Steve Ashton and Theresa Oswald are making new spending promises on the campaign trail and musing about more deficits, Pallister said.

One bond rating agency has already warned the government that its credit rating could be downgraded if it continues to run deficits.

A lower credit rating would mean higher interest payments, resulting in less money available for government programs, Pallister said.

The NDP candidates have said there are more important things than balanced books and they’ve suggested Pallister’s approach would cut front-line services and jobs.

The New Democrats had promised to stop running deficits by 2016, but all three candidates have said that date may be pushed back.
