TORONTO – Twenty-eight streetcars will be pulled out of service and replaced by buses during the afternoon rush hour Tuesday due to being unable to operate in the extreme cold.

The TTC announced Tuesday afternoon that 28 streetcars across the 511 Bathurst, 502 Downtowner and 503 Kingston routes will be replaced by buses.

The TTC warns the extreme cold weather may make the afternoon commute, and Wednesday morning commute, longer than usual despite the supplementary buses.

The transit agency says the streetcars, over 30 years old in some cases, cannot operate during extreme cold temperatures as the pneumatic air lines which operate brakes, doors, and windshield wipers can freeze.

The city of Toronto issued an extreme cold weather alert Tuesday morning warning temperatures could reach – 29 degrees Celsius with the wind chill.
