EDMONTON – A freezing rain warning that was issued Tuesday morning for the Capital Region and areas in northwestern Alberta was dropped around 5 p.m.

When it activated the warning, Environment Canada said patchy freezing rain was possible through the afternoon and into early evening.

“The arctic air has shifted southeast, so now the jet stream shifts as well, allowing warm air to move in from the west,” said Global Edmonton meteorologist Nicola Crosbie, adding that “freezing rain occurs when warm rain falls on a frozen surface and freezes on contact.

Several areas, including the City of Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park were included in the warning.

After last week’s cold spell, temperatures this week are set to hover slightly at or above freezing all week.

“This is great news as we will head towards above seasonal temperatures. But often, moisture will come in, causing freezing rain to occur,” added Crosbie.
