WATCH: Catherine McDonald reports on the suspicious explosion and fire in a Toronto home that woke up the neighbourhood.

TORONTO – A house under construction was destroyed by fire overnight in west-end Toronto and residents in the neighbourhood say similar incidents like this one have happened before.

Witnesses say an explosion was heard just before fire broke out at the home before midnight on Markham Street near Queen Street and Bathurst Street.

Fire crews quickly had the fire under control and no one was injured.

WATCH: The owner of the house says he does not know who or why anyone would target his home.

One area resident told Global News there have been fires at the location before.

“About 12 months ago there was a similar incident,” said resident Tony Duggan who lives in an apartment next door. “An old house that burnt about one or two in the morning, a big explosion, police and fire managed to put it out.”

Duggan said there was another attempt to burn the building down six weeks ago.

“After the last attempt about six weeks ago, police came through our building asking people whether they’ve seen or heard anything,” he said.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate.
