RM of Sherwood wants better disclosure laws

REGINA – Two weeks after its completion, neither the provincial government nor the RM of Sherwood will share the findings of a report into the handling of a major development.

The proposed Wascana Village development could be home to 14,000 people near the edge of the city of Regina. The RM says the government needs better laws for disclosing when someone stands to financially benefit.

“You may see it as black; I may see it as grey,” said deputy reeve Tim Probe. “That’s where we need to tighten that sort of stuff up.”

RM of Sherwood reeve Kevin Eberle sat out decisions on the project because he owns land in the area.

Probe said the RM relied on legal advice, but still didn’t fully understand the rules. He’d like to see changes to the Municipalities Act.

“We as councillors, whether it’s the RM of Sherwood or any municipality, do the best we possibly can. (There just needs to be) some reinforcement,” Probe said.

The RM council disagrees with many of the inquiry’s findings, but Probe said each recommendation from the inquiry will be adopted.

Findings of the inquiry won’t be made public until the province decides to.

A government spokesperson said in a statement, “The report is currently being reviewed by government officials, including Justice officials, to determine if there is any personal information that may need to be redacted.”

The statement went on to say: “We hope these issues will be resolved by the end of the week.”
