TORONTO — Audiences were clearly taken with the idea of a third dose of vengeful Liam Neeson, as Taken 3 raked in more than $40 million to top the weekend box office, according to studio estimates.

The opening haul was far better than the $25 million debut of Taken in 2009 but less than the $50 million of the 2012 sequel.

To date, the Taken franchise has taken in $694 million and is on track hit a billion.
