Roberto Luongo given standing ovation in return to Vancouver

For the first time since he was traded away, Roberto Luongo heard directly from Vancouver fans – and they gave him a standing ovation.

A video tribute took place during the first period of tonight’s game between the Canucks and Florida Panthers at Rogers Arena, Luongo’s first game in Vancouver since the March 4, 2014 trade.

“I don’t think the crowd will be as hostile to Luongo as they were to Ryan Kesler,” said Global News’ Squire Barnes.

For his part, Luongo believed “it’s going to be emotional.”

“I’m flattered they would do that,” he said. “I’m happy there was some sort of recognition. It’s nice for both sides I think.”

When the tribute aired, fans rose for an extended standing ovation. Luongo took off his mask to respond to the crowd in kind.

Earlier this week, Luongo said he might still be a Canuck if he played in Heritage Classic.
