Halifax university instructor resigns after sending sexual photo to student

HALIFAX – The president of a Nova Scotia lobbying organization who lectured part-time at a Halifax university has admitted to sending a sexual photo to a female student.

Michael Kydd, president of Merit Nova Scotia, which advocates on behalf of non-union contractors, confirmed the allegations against him on Thursday afternoon and said he has resigned from Mount Saint Vincent University.

Kydd said he had consensual sex with a 38-year-old female student twice last year while separated from his wife, and the pair exchanged intimate photos at a later time.

“I made a serious error in judgment,” he told a gathering of reporters. “It’s something that I’m going to have to live with, from a career perspective and a family perspective, for the rest of my life”

The allegations surfaced after one of the photos, purportedly of Kydd, was posted on social media.

The university previously announced an instructor had been removed from the classroom pending an investigation over an alleged breach of its code of conduct.

University president and vice-chancellor Dr. Ramona Lumpkin said once the situation became public knowledge, the university felt it was important to let students know about it.
