TORONTO — The People’s Choice Awards brought stars out in Los Angeles on Wednesday night as fan favourites were named in dozens of film, TV and music categories.

Winners did their best to feign surprise at hearing their names called (they are notified in advance) and thanked fans for voting for them.

“I’ll say 30, 40 per cent of the votes were my mom, but the other 60 per cent, it really, really means a lot to me,” said Chris Evans, who accepted the award for Favourite Action Movie Actor.

Winners who showed up to collect their Waterford Crystal statuette included Melissa McCarthy, Adam Sandler, Robert Downey Jr., Hunter Hayes, Betty White, Ellen DeGeneres, Viola Davis and Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting.

The cast of Big Bang Theory ended the evening by accepting the People’s Choice Award for Favourite TV Show.

Not surprisingly, show performers Lady Antebellum and Iggy Azalea won awards. Fall Out Boy also performed.

Multiple award-winning artists Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran were among the many stars who did not attend.

The Toronto-shot series, which airs in Canada on Showcase, was named Favourite Network Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show.

Edmonton’s Nathan Fillion and Hamilton, Ont. native Stana Katic, co-stars on Castle, won Crime Drama TV Actor and Crime Drama TV Actress respectively.
