Rules relaxed for Highway 97 HOV lanes in Kelowna

KELOWNA – The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is changing the regulations for the high occupancy vehicle lanes on Highway 97 through Kelowna.

Effective January 19, the time of use restrictions will only be in effect for the day time hours, excluding holidays.

In a news release, the ministry says: “This change will mean that the HOV lanes will be in effect during peak periods when traffic volumes and transit use are at the highest levels. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, the HOV lanes will be used by vehicles with two or more occupants, BC Transit buses, Handy Dart buses, taxis and motorcycles only.”

The ministry says along with the time of use changes, motorists can expect to see increased enforcement of the rules forbidding single occupancy vehicles.

The HOV lanes were created in 2009 to support the Rapid Transit project. They will push further along the bus route to UBCO as the highway expands to six lanes.
