Food delivery program in Vancouver scrapped due to safety issues

VANCOUVER – Dozens of people are speaking out this morning about the cancellation of a long-running food service in Vancouver.

The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society sent a letter saying it will no longer provide food to a transitional housing building because of safety concerns. It says staff were repeatedly harassed and yelled at when delivering meals.

The city says it will investigate but residents are wondering what is next.

“It just feels like somebody stabbed you in the heart,” said one resident. “That’s my feeling, now what?”

In a statement, the City of Vancouver says they are unaware of any ongoing safety issues at the building and the meal program will continue with another organization.

“3475 East Hastings is a temporary housing unit operated in partnership by the Community Builders Foundation and the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society. Community Builders Foundation will continue to operate the meal program to ensure that all tenants of the building receive meals.”
