Major commuter routes the focus of Wednesday snow clearing

CALGARY – The City of Calgary will be out in full force once again on Wednesday, working to clear snow-covered streets.

Officials say they have been focusing on clearing priority 1 routes, like Macleod Trail and Glenmore Trail, since the snow stopped falling around 2 a.m.

They hope to clear those routes within 24 hours, in accordance to their seven-day Snow Event plan.

Once crews are finished clearing priority 1 routes, they will move on to priority 2 routes, as well as feeder and collector roads.

Priority 2 routes are classified as roads which carry 5,000 to 19,999 vehicles per day, like Kensington Road and Acadia Drive, and are typically bus routes. They will need to be cleared within 48 hours.

Calgary police have been kept busy responding to fender benders on icy city streets.

They say 53 collisions were reported between midnight and 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, three of which involved injuries.

NO SNOW ROUTE PARKING BAN

The City of Calgary says on their website that they do not anticipate they will be implementing a Snow Route Parking Ban.

When a Snow Route Parking Ban is in place, residents parked on designated Snow Routes must move their vehicles – and can be ticketed or towed if they don’t.

Snow Routes include major roadways, collector roads and most bus routes, and are marked by blue signs with a white snowflake.
