WATCH: Okanagan seniors feel stranded by snow

PENTICTON — The recent heavy snowfall has made it difficult for all of us in the Okanagan to get around, but it can be especially hard for seniors.  Sam Nadane, 93, feels stranded in his Penticton home because the driveway is covered in a foot of snow.

“I can’t get out with the snow,” says Nadane.

The blast of winter isn’t just creating challenges for seniors, but also for those who help care for them

Lisa Slyzek, the owner of a local home care service, says her staff has had difficulties accessing some of their clients.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Some of them had to go up to steep hills and there was no available parking, so they’d stop their cars and walk to their clients,” explains Slyzek.

Slyzek also says some of their clients’ non-essential appointments had to be rescheduled to reduce the risk of travelling on the snowy, slick roads.

The need to get to appointments is exactly why Nadane feels the urgency to get his driveway cleared.

“The wife is 95, if we have to go for an appointment or emergency, how do we get out?” asks Nadane.

Luckily two acquaintances from Oliver eventually arrived to help him shovel the driveway on Tuesday.

But there are still other seniors trapped in the same predicament.
