Danielle Smith faces competition to be Tory Highwood candidate

EDMONTON – Former Wildrose leader Danielle Smith will not get a free pass to become the Progressive Conservative candidate for the seat she now holds.

Suzanne Oel, president of the Tory association in the Highwood constituency, says a plan to hold a nomination vote hasn’t changed.

Oel says others have expressed interest in running for the PCs, but she won’t say how many.

Smith could not be reached for comment.

Three weeks ago, Smith led eight of her MLAs across the floor to join Premier Jim Prentice’s government, leaving just five Wildrose members to be the official Opposition. The nine have since been criticized for abandoning their duty for personal gain, and one of them, Rob Anderson, says he won’t run in the next election.
