WINNIPEG — A frantic search for a missing teenager, feared lost in the cold in a Winnipeg neighborhood since Monday was successful.
17-year old Bethlehem Eliso was found just before 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. She had been missing since January 5 at around 11:45 a.m. in the Elmwood area of the city.
She was last seen leaving Elmwood High School. Police released a security camera image Tuesday of Eliso, bundled up against the cold, walking in the area Monday.
The Winnipeg Police Service asked for help in finding her.
“When we have someone going missing in these type of frigid conditions you know our thoughts can turn and at the end of the day she is alive,” Constable Eric Hofley said Tuesday.
Eliso arrived in Canada with her Mom and two siblings less then one month ago to join Eliso’s dad, who was already a resident here.
Monday was her first day of class at Elmwood High School. That’s where she was last seen Monday.

Tuesday afternoon the teen was found in an empty home near the school. A man discovered her inside and through her broken English, she was able to tell her rescuer that she attended class at Elmwood. The man called police and officers found her.
Police took her to the family apartment. Eliso did not suffer any injuries.
“You deploy the resources and the circumstances that require those resources and today fortunately a happy conclusion was reached and absolutely ecstatic that was the end result,” Hofley explained.
The family has requested privacy at this time, but say they believe Eliso lost her way while walking from the school and became disoriented. She was sleeping Tuesday evening among friends and family, who say they are grateful for Eliso’s return.
