Natural gas consumption record set in Saskatchewan

SASKATOON – A frigid weekend in Saskatchewan had many people turning up the thermostat and gas fireplaces. SaskEnergy says a 24-hour consumption record was set between Sunday and Monday.

During that period, SaskEnergy delivered 1.27 petajoules of natural gas. That’s a two per cent increase over the last record which was set on Dec. 6, 2012.

SaskEnergy officials say part of the increase can be attributed to the 7,300 new customers added to the system since the last record was set.

In Saskatoon, the mercury hit a low of -37.6 on Sunday, the coldest it has been in almost two years. With the wind chill, it felt like -50 at 9 o’clock.

All parts of the province were under the deep freeze, with wind chills in the mid to low 40’s.
