TORONTO — The Last Ship is sailing into the sunset.
The Broadway musical composed by Sting — who joined the cast last month in hopes of boosting ticket sales — will close on Jan. 24.
The New York Times reported producers shared the news via email on Monday night.
“We have been bewildered and saddened by our inability to sustain an audience for this musical that we deeply love,” read a message from Jeffrey Seller and Kathryn Schenker.
The musical reportedly cost $15 million to bring to the stage and was costing $625,000 a week.
According to the Times, The Last Ship grossed only $953,165 during the prime holiday week, with only 83 per cent of seats filled.
The musical about the lives of ship builders in a British town, inspired by Sting’s childhood, previewed in Chicago last summer and opened on Broadway in October.
