REGINA – Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) and its law enforcement partners will continue with month-long traffic spotlights in 2015, instead of going back to the two-day blitz. January’s province-wide focus is on intersection safety.

Collisions at intersections have a high risk of serious injuries and even death. There were over 11,000 collisions at intersections across the province in 2013, resulting in more than 3,500 injuries and 47 deaths.

Based on SGI’s three-year average between 2011-13, almost 40 per cent of Saskatchewan crashes happened at intersections. Some of the most common contributing factors were driving too fast for road conditions, following vehicles too closely and disobeying traffic lights.

“Intersection collisions have increased year-over-year,” said Andrew Cartmell, president and CEO of SGI.

“Too many people are being hurt and killed on Saskatchewan roads and it needs to stop.”

The Saskatchewan traffic spotlight in January 2014 also focused on these types of violations. Police issued 815 tickets at intersections during the month.

SGI is reminding drivers who have the right of way to be cautious because other vehicles may not be able to stop immediately during winter road conditions.
