Getting back into healthy habits following the holidays

REGINA – To keep healthy, it may be to time to limit the remaining holiday food indulgences, but one local registered nutritionist said that they don’t need to be done away with completely.

“Raw cocoa is very healthy, it’s really high in antioxidants. Finding homemade healthy chocolate recipes, there really are healthy alternatives to everything,” said Morgan Tangjerd, who works for Gold’s Gym Regina.

Finding alternatives is better for lasting results compared to diets, she added.

“You’re still able to eat your favourite foods on a regular basis without feeling that you’re restricted or dieting,” said Tangjerd.

When it comes to the other healthy habit that often takes a hit, personal trainer Brandi Smith said workout routines sometimes need to be relearned after the holidays.

“The night before, pack your gym bag, get your lunch, get all your healthy food ready, prep everything, so tomorrow everything’s easily accessible for you and you can’t really skip out of it,” said Smith, who also works at the gym chain.

She said that for people of any fitness level, it’s important to have someone to answer to for your fitness goals, such as a workout buddy, “or even a personal trainer, they’re holding you accountable, so you have to show up. You can’t just not go,” said Smith.
