MONTREAL – Brace yourselves, Montreal, because the weather is taking a dip this weekend and the commute is going to be a slippery one.
Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for Montreal, Laval and parts of the South Shore.

Denis Thibodeau, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, says a major winter storm is heading towards the province, bringing a messy mix of snow and freezing rain.

About 10 cm of snow and ice pellets started falling Saturday afternoon with brief bouts of freezing rain overnight before turning into rain early Sunday morning.

“Snowfall amounts between 15 and 25 centimetres with moderate to strong easterly winds will generate blowing snow that could be widespread,” said Environment Canada in a statement.
“Between 5 and 15 millimetres of ice build-up is expected.”
Temperatures are expected to hit the double digits late Sunday evening followed by a cold front moving from west to east bringing back cold temperatures, wind and snow flurries.

Power outages
According to Hydro-Québec, around 21,000 house were without power early Sunday morning across the province.
In Montreal, about 7,333 customers were affected by the blackout with several areas of Montreal still without power.
Around 11,027 households were affected in the Montérégie, 15 in Laval and 2,079 houses were without power in Lanaudière.
The areas most affected are Châteauguay and La Prairie in the South Shore and Verdun and Pointe-Claire on the island.

Transportation
Provincial police are advising drivers to be extremely cautious on the roads.
There were a few minor accidents overnight, but police say no one was seriously injured.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery,” said Environment Canada.
“Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.”

Air Canada has announced it will waive flight-change fees at Montreal’s Trudeau airport, as well as in Toronto and Ottawa.
Snow clearing updates
The city of Montreal is deploying trucks to remove snow and spray salt on the roads.
The budget is expected to hover around $20M.
