Good Samaritan chases down suspected street racer

Thanks to a fast-acting, fleet-footed Good Samaritan, two men are in custody following a dramatic car accident near the Queensborough Bridge yesterday afternoon.

Witnesses said they couldn’t believe the carnage of two vehicles that smashed into each other on Marine Way in Burnaby yesterday afternoon. Burnaby businessman Bryce Osborn says he initially stopped at the scene of the accident to help the drivers.

“I had just got out of my car and I popped the trunk because I have a first aid kit in there,” Osborn told Global News. “And the cars were up in smoke, so I just got out and pulled out my first aid kit.”

But then Osborn quickly realized the two drivers didn’t want his help when “they grouped up together, jumped the median and started bolting down the street.”

According to witnesses, the two drivers were allegedly street racing eastbound along Marine Way, when both lost control. One car hit a median and the other went into a ditch.

Osborn’s gut instinct was that these two guys cannot get away, so he started chasing them.

“I had just finished a Red Bull [energy drink], I was ready to go,” Osborn laughs.

But in actuality he was angry.

“They put a lot of people in danger… if I had my daughter in my car. They could have killed someone. It’s New Years Day and these two were driving recklessly. I was just angry and thought no these guys are not getting away.”

After pursing them a short distance, Osborn says one of the young men stopped.

“He was actually out of steam, I think he hit his head pretty good and he was just out of it,” he says.

“I just said to him you can come back the easy way or the hard way and he just put his hands up.”

Osborn says he walked the 21-year-old back to the accident scene, sat him on the median, and waited for the police.

The other suspect, a 17-year-old was caught by police in New Westminster.

Both vehicles were stolen, according to police.

Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. The 21-year-old is still in custody and the 17-year-old has been released.

Burnaby RCMP are recommending several charges including possession of stolen property, breach of probation and dangerous.
