HALIFAX – We’re only the second day into the New Year, but Nova Scotians are already getting to work on our New Years Resolutions. For many of us, that means hitting the gym.
“It’s been really busy today, we’ve seen a lot of new faces come in today and a lot of people that have been away for a little bit,” said Amina Ferchichi, manager of Goodlife Fitness in Dartmouth.
If getting in shape is your goal this year, experts say the key to sticking with your new workout routine is to set smart goals. “Make sure you have something that’s realistic, that’s timely that you can stick to and make it fun, make your workouts fun, switch it up, make sure you get out of your comfort zone cause that’s what it’s all about as well,” said Ferchichi.
Katie Pennick-Reilly is one of many who are making her health a priority this year. She’s made a promise to eat cleaner and exercise more. “I have a gym really close to my school, so I’m trying to go to the gym right after school, and hopefully that’ll work out for me, I’m pretty determined,” she said.
Spending time at a gym isn’t for everybody, but instructors say yoga can be beneficial for everyone. “The nice thing with yoga is it has a physical benefit, it also works on the organs of the body so that you have a deeper level of health, rather then just the fitness level of health,” said Heather Reynolds, Owner of 108 Yoga in Halifax.
“It’s really about breath work and learning to manage stress during exercise, so that has an overall improvement of performance physically, but also on overall wellness.”
If staying indoors isn’t your thing, there are ways to stay active and lose weight while having fun outdoors.
“We’ll go out all year round, we start in January, we got a schedule booked from January right until the end of December,” said Nancy Parsons, president of the Chebucto Hiking Club. Parsons says joining a walking or hiking club is a great way to stay social while working up a sweat, and it’s easy on the pockets.
“It doesn’t cost you to walk, it doesn’t cost you to walk with us, and we have the fresh air too, it’s about being outside for me,” she said.
