CALGARY – Calgarians ringing in the new year at Olympic Plaza will do so without a traditional fireworks display.
The city says it’s blazing a new trail when it comes to lighting up the night sky.
“Knowing that we’re moving into a digital age into 2015, we thought it was important to kind of take Calgary out of the realm of the normal,” said City of Calgary superintendent of festivals & events Teresa Byrne.
The countdown to midnight will instead include a multimedia show with synchronized music, lighting, projected animations and pyrotechnics.
“We’re more fortunate than most cities, we have five days of Global Fest, we have 11 days of Stampede and of course our fireworks spectacular during Canada Day, so New Year’s Eve is a time to try something a little bit more exciting,” explained Byrne.
But while she promises the display won’t disappoint, Calgarian Georgia Boivin-Lee says she already is.
“The main part of New Year’s for me is the fireworks.”
The last time the city hosted a New Year’s Eve fireworks display was when the calendar flipped to 2011, which is why some Calgary communities have decided to add fireworks to their festivities.
“A lot of the families came and talked to us about it, we weren’t sure we could afford it so we held a few fundraisers,” said Craig Somers of the Arbor Lake Residents Association.
At 7 p.m., 10 minutes of fireworks will be let off to celebrate the start of 2015.
