Driver hospitalized after crash in Pitt Meadows

A vehicle veered off Lougheed Hwy. and struck a signpost on Sat., Dec. 27, 2014. Curtis Kreklau

An unusual collision involving the actions of a police officer and two drivers is under investigation in Pitt Meadows.

On Saturday evening, a westbound vehicle veered off the road into a signpost on Lougheed Hwy. near Old Dewdney Trunk Rd. Firefighters had to use the jaws of life to get the driver out of the vehicle. She was rushed to hospital to be treated for injuries that are described as serious but non-life threatening.

RCMP say a member of the local detachment was conducting speed enforcement at the scene with a radar gun. The officer saw a vehicle speeding toward the area, and for safety reasons decided to take action.

“In an effort to deter the speeder, they flashed their emergency equipment,” says RCMP Insp. Davis Wendell. “And subsequent to that, the vehicle operator made a very spontaneous lane change, which resulted in the vehicle following behind it running off the roadway and crashing into the telephone pole.”

RCMP say they have consulted with the Independent Investigations Office of B.C., which handles cases where members of the public suffer injuries in incidents with police, but at this point it appears the police watchdog is not handling the investigation.
