Paint and Sip nights see surging popularity in Calgary

CALGARY – A new trend hitting Calgary’s night life combines some of the finer things in life.

Brenda Mahoney and Loretta Gotney are the brilliant minds behind Vin Gogh Studio, a paint and sip studio that pairs wine with paints, paintbrushes and a little bit of creativity.

“It’s for the person with no artistic experience. I won’t say ability because everyone has ability,” said Mahoney.

“You come in and you paint a picture, have a glass of wine and have a good time.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Since opening their doors earlier this year, the pair have seen a steady stream of customers eager to get their creative juices flowing.

“We’ve only been open two months and we’re already having regulars. They’re looking at the calendar,” said Gotney.

“I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve never done a painting class so its definitely something new and exciting.”

Paint and sip studios are already popular south of the border, but are now gaining traction in Calgary.

Paint nights are even starting to pop up at local bars like Ranchman’s.

“As adults we’re afraid to give ourselves permission to play or to be creative and everyone is creative they just don’t recognize it,” said Mahoney.

To Mahoney and Gotney, the concept is less about finding the next Da Vinci or Michelangelo than it is about allowing Calgarians to explore their creative  side, with the help of some liquid courage.
