WATCH: Brazilian zoo animals receive Christmas treats

Chimpanzees, orangutans, elephants and other mammals at a zoo in Rio de Janeiro were given Christmas presents of seasonal fruits and panettone, a Christmas bread, usually sweet, which was made without sugar especially for the animals.

Visitors took pictures of the orangutans as they opened boxes wrapped in festive paper and enjoyed the treats inside.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

One elephant swallowed not only the grapes he received, but also the watermelon basket in which the fruits came.

Carla Cunha, a technician at Rio Zoo, said that the gifts were being given to the animals as a way of celebrating Christmas together.

Christmas is celebrated in the summer season in Brazil, so the animals were facing an outside temperature of around 26 degrees Celsius.
